about

As our group took up the name Sea Island & Ferry, it also became my wish to have works that would detail the story of islands in Hong Kong. My first attempt at such storytelling was “Salt Chronicles.” Written in May 2016, this piece represents different eras of Yim Tin Tsai, an island off the shores of Sai Kung. I started with the times with the island was predominantly natural and chaotic, moving first onto a folk-style theme representing the settlement by Chinese villagers. The middle section (in 12/8 time), was co-written with Timothy Wan, and signifies the arrival of outside influences such as the Catholic religion, and eventual desire for modern comfort amidst rapid urbanization. After a quiet section which laments the desertion of the island after the World War II, the piece rejuvenates into a lively finale, as Hong Kongers re-embrace the island as a historic site to preserve in recent years.
